In October 2018, someone in South Carolina purchased a lottery ticket and became $1.5 billion richer overnight. The winning ticket was sold at a KC convenience store in the town of Simpsonville, not far from Greenville. The odds of winning were said to be 1 in 303 million and only one ticket matched all six numbers. Even though $1.537 billion sounds gargantuan by lottery standards, the jackpot was actually the second highest in history, behind a $1.586 billion Powerball prize in January 2016. The winners of that jackpot were in Tennessee, California and Florida so the prize was split three ways.
