When shopping for a new personal computer, U.S. consumers are spoiled for choice. According to a recent Statista Consumer Insights survey, three brands in particular are ahead of the competition regarding popularity: Dell, HP and Apple.
As our chart shows, Dell, the U.S. company founded 40 years ago in Austin, Texas, leads the desktop PC market. Twenty-nine percent of respondents who live in a household with a desktop own a PC by Dell. HP comes in at a close second with 27 percent, while desktop solutions by Apple, which is more known for its smartphones and laptops, are owned by 23 percent of survey participants with a stationary computer in their home.
In the laptop category, Apple comes in second with 28 percent. Roughly a third of all respondents said they own an HP laptop, while 24 percent claimed to be Dell notebook users.
Zooming out, 39 percent of all survey respondents said their household has at least one desktop PC, while 68 percent of participants' households were equipped with a laptop.
After a pandemic-induced surge in laptop and desktop shipments in 2020 and 2021, unit sales dropped below 250 million in 2023, according to data by Gartner. This marks the lowest point of the market since 2006. Even though the introduction of "AI-first" laptops by companies like Dell and Microsoft is expected to bolster sales numbers in 2024, it's unclear whether the excitement for these new product lines can outweigh macroeconomic factors and expected component price hikes.
